Mocktail party in Oxfords Bonn Square

Recycle Week 2010 kicked off in an unusual manner last Saturday with a mocktail party held in Oxford’s Bonn Square.

Council staff joined up with charity organisations Barnado’s, Emmaus, Helen and Douglas House and Sobell House Hospice to run a sedate Flash Mob event for Saturday morning shoppers.

A temporary upmarket living room was assembled using some of the quality furniture and household goods the organisations had on sale in their shops. Passersby were handed reuse directories with lists of where they can take and buy quality second hand items across the county.

Waste Reduction Officer at the county council, Eiles Robinson, was the driving force behind the event. She said: “The fact that we’d set up a living room in the middle of the street got people’s attention.  We were walking around in posh frocks with price tags on and this really got people talking.”
