Love Food Hate Waste campaign hits the streets
Council recycling teams from across the county are out on the streets giving advice to residents on how Oxfordshire can help reduce the UK’s £10 billion food waste bill.
As part of the Love Food Hate Waste Campaign, Oxfordshire Waste Partnership (OWP) is getting residents to make a pledge to undertake simple tasks to cut their food waste. In return they’ll be provided with some simple kitchen tools to help such as fridge thermometers, measuring spoons and a ‘perfect portion planner’ which lists recommended portion sizes.
Everyone who makes a pledge will also receive a free leftovers recipe book to be produced after OWP’s leftovers recipe competition which closes at the end of March.
The roadshows that have already taken place in Wallingford and Chipping Norton have been well received. Residents have been keen to find out how, by taking a few simple steps, they can reduce unnecessary food waste and even more importantly in these economic times save money too.
Chair of OWP, Cllr John Tanner, says: "These days we all have to think about not wasting food. Using up leftovers is good for our bank balances and for the environment. Some of the tastiest home-made dishes, like bread and butter pudding or chicken soup, can be made from left over food."
Joining council officers at most of these events is the Energy Saving Trust (EST). They’re offering energy saving tips specifically for the kitchen and are proving an environmentally friendly eco-kettle as a prize draw.
Ruth Wharton, outreach energy advisor from the Energy Saving Trust is joining the roadshows. She says, “This is a great combination of EST and OWP. Working together enables us to give householders all the advice they need to be green in their kitchens!”
